H1b approved f1 student and change of status

Question

My h1B is approved and valid from October 1st, 2013. I am a student on OPT F1 status.
Change of status wasnt applied under consular process and my current OPT is valid until 11 more months, so I can still work in USA till then.

Is it possible to change status without traveling outside USA by applying i-539 within USA?
Or
Do I need to file an amendment?

Do not make it very complicated. Go to the US Counsulate and make sure you start working on H1b from October. You have to forego your OPT when you have your h1b.
