I have been told that the next H1B visas that are valid will only be issued in April of next year and not valid until October 2014 but I want to make the transition into an industry.

Any new employer you work with would need to wait until April 1st, 2014 before they can petition for an H1b for you and you wouldn't be able to start until October 2014.
