Maintaining status after laid off from h1b job

Question

I am working on H1b and fearing of layoff. I want to stay in  US and look for job. I am trying to change from H1b to B2.

ANother option would be to work in University on temporary basis as research technician. 

Is it possible to convert from H1b to J1 visa as it is much easier to use in this case.

 

1. Is J1 visa better than B2?

2. Can I transfer H1b to J1

You cant work on B-2. J-1 could be subject to a two-year home country residency requirement.
