Will i be able to stay on company payroll after h1b expires when I am waiting for GC approval?

I have valid h1b which expires in September. I am planning for an interview prior to expriation date.

If I don't get the approval, will I still be able to stay on company payroll and not work until getting the GC

or dont I have any other option other than quiting my job?

This become unlawful if you are getting paid when not in valid status or when not working.
