Renewing of h1b visa which was expired

My wife is currently on an H4. She was previously employed on an H1B and took a sabbatical for a year. When she was about to go back to her previous job, she realized that her H1B petition expired a week ago. We want to know if it is possible for her to still apply for an extension of her H1B?
