How do i extend h1b if I got just 2 years on H1b tenure on my passport?

Question

I am working on h1b visa valid till Dec 2014. Because my passport was set to expire in Dec 2013, I got my h1b expiring in 2013.
I later renewed my passport and was checking if my h1b visa can be extended to 2014.
 

I had a brief communication with Deferred Inspection Office and they informed me that I have an option of either filling out a I539 or go to Mexico with my passport and documents and they will give me the correct I94 which will be extended till Dec 2014.

I-539 is not for extending status on an H-1B. Speak to licensed immigration attorney.
