The expiration date on my H1B visa is December 31st, 2013. My wife has an H4 visa and has 5 years of experience in software development. What I would like is to try and get an L1 visa so my wife can work on an L2 visa. My question is can I convert my H1b visa into an L1 visa after an H1B extension? If not, is there any alternate ways so it can be converted to L1 visa during the H1B extension?

If you keep a valid H1B status and you also qualify for an L1 status, then there is a possibility that your employer might change your status in the United States to L1 status. Just make sure you are aware that you can only be in the United Stated with L1B status for a period of 5 years minus anytime you may have already been in the United States with your H1B status. The same goes for L1A status, except you can only be in the United States for 7 years minus time you have already spent there in H1B status.

I can not guarantee you anything though as I am not an attorney so I can't give out official legal advice. I haven't completed legal research to confirm this answer. I may be hired for a fee, to obtain a formal legal opinion which may change from the information you see here.
