Stay outside USA during H1b extension

My H1b is approved for a year and expires in September 2014 and this would be my 6th year since my initially approved in 2008. I came to USA in Dec 2009 and would like to capture my time outside USA for checking maximum allowed stay.
We missed this detail before requesting for recent extension.

Should i be able to submit the proof of stay outside USA and get new approval documents?
Or
should I wait until 180 days before h1b expires and later resubmit it?
I might be able to get PERM and I-140 approved by then.

You should be waiting for 180 days before your visa expires. I don't think you can ask for extensions of stay on an amendment. Your employer might have to file a new petition to recapture the time later. Just double work...think about it.
