Can I stay to H4 for the eriod I get my green card and H1b status and continue my stay in USA?

I hold a H1B which is valid till Feb 2014. My PERM labor approval is still pending and my current employer has filled for green card. Is it possible for me to switch to H4 during this period and stay in USA? Will there be any legal issues if I extend my H1B and continue working? I want to continue my stay in USA, what are the options that can be legally excercised? Do I need to go back to my country after one year or only after my green card status is current? Please help.
